#MediCALForAllCalifornians

Our health is the top priority, for all people, with no exceptions.  In a pandemic and long after one is gone – our health must be protected.  And as healthcare is a human right – it remains critically important that we ensure such health protections cover all people in the State of California with an intentional focus and addition support on all marginalized and underserved populations previously and historically excluded from receiving quality care – including low-wage workers, the Disabled, health workers, independent contractors, Veterans, California Indians & Indigenous peoples, Black and Latinx communities, our Elders, LGBTQ and Gender Noncomforming Folx, Rural communities, the Poor, Migrant populations, our currently incarcerated peoples, unhoused & our housing insecure.

Healthcare is a human right and #OurCalifornia must have a Governor and government that reflects & protects this basic tenent.

We cannot allow the duopoly, electeds or their wealthy donors to continue to place their best interests over ours.

We cannot let a Governor dine indoors with health insurance lobbyists and corporatists who intend to & can raise our premiums by up to 40% in 2021 just because they can.

We cannot have our healthcare tied to our employment.

We cannot continue to allow Californians to go into insurmountable debt for experiencing a basic human condition – sickness.

We cannot continue to allow people to ration critical and life saving medication because they cannot afford the prescription.

We cannot continue to peacefully exist under for-profit healthcare – in this pandemic and long after.

No more.

#OurCalifornia deserves better and it’s time we have a government and Governor that agrees.  As your 2022 Gubernatorial candidate, I intend to End Poverty in California, and this is how I believe #MediCALForAllCalifornians will help us achieve this:

  • I will Reject all campaign cash, donations and dark money from health insurance, lobbyists, big pharmaceutical corporations
  • Elevate legislation that will provide every Californian in the State with free at point-of-service care within a single-payer MediCALsystem in the State:
    • Be it enacting HB 562, California’s Healthy CA – Single Payer MediCAL for All Bill;
    • Working with by Senators Lara & Atkins, with Principal Coauthors Senators Galgiani and Weiner & Assemblymembers Bonta & Gomez, Coauthors Senators Allen, McGuire and Skinner & Assemblymembers Chiu, Friedman, Kalra, McCarty, Nazarian, Stone and Thurmond and any other interested State Assembly & State Senators to create new legislation for another Single-Payer MediCAL for All Bill;
  • Creating the #MediCALForAllCalifornians by expanding full MediCAL coverage immediately to all Californians and ensuring #OurCalifornia receives comprehensive healthcare coverage, free at the point-of-service including but not limited to:
    • COVID-19 Specific:
    • COVID-19 testing and treatment;
    • COVID-19 Protective equipment;
    • Expanded hospital capacity, especially prioritizing rural areas, territories and tribal lands being hit hardest;
    • Waive and/or ensure insurance companies reimburse all pandemic surprise bills #OurCalifornia has received which are not covered by AB 72  – specifically ambulance, and air ambulance charges which can amount to tens and hundreds of thousands of dollars;
    • Commandeer any private hospitals for COVID-19 care whenever necessary for #OurCalifornia;
  • #MediCALForAllCalifornians will cover medical, dental, hearing, vision, and home- and community-based long-term care, in-patient and out-patient services, mental health and substance abuse treatment, reproductive and maternity care, mobility aids and assistive devices, prescription drugs, and more;
  • Transform our healthcare system, products, service and care received for #OurCalifornia.  These 5 major shifting techniques are proven and will significantly improve population health, client care,  and ensure cost-avoidant practices for the State:
    • Enable proactive, preventive & predictive care over the reactive “sick” care system based on the episodic, acute care model most currently receive;
    • Promote personalized care instead of one-size fits all approaches, ensure healthcare services are client-centered;
    • Decentralize healthcare locations instead of our current corporate institution-centered focus;
    • Empower patient involvement in their health and health journeys with agency, input, and empathy rather than paternalistic, dismissive or shaming experiences often had;
    • Promote value-based care for clients over volume-based care of clients;
    • Develop a statewide agenda on health equity;
  • We live in a society of health “fast fixes” and are overprescribed because our health is constantly commodified by for-profit corporations.  The amount of medication we are prescribed can become an expensive & vicious cycle of never ending medication, constantly treating new side effects, ineffective medication, unnecessary medication, addiction  & deteriorating quality of life.  It’s critical that we completely transform our healthcare system, especially for Elders, the disabled, women after childbirth & other high-risk patient populations, that are overprescribed by enabling proactive, preventative, predictive & quality care;
    • Create legislation that bans and financially disincentivizes medical practitioners from big pharmaceutical tactics of:
      • Prescribing harmful, unnecessary medication to all Californians; additional sanctions applied when conduct occurs with Elders, the Disabled, Women and Childbirth and all other high-risk populations;
      • Misdiagnosing & prescribing for MediCAL & Medicaid billing purposes; additional sanctions applied when conduct occurs with Elders, the Disabled, Women and Childbirth and all other high-risk populations;
  • Stop the pharmaceutical industry from price-gouging #OurCalifornia and ensuring all Californians pay no more than a total $250 a year for all medicines needed by Californians under our new  #MediCALForAllCalifornians, the enactment SB562 & the fulfillment of Governor Newsom’s unkept promise and budgeted 2020-2021 proposal that California become the first state in the nation to establish its own generic drug label, making those medications available at an affordable price to the state’s 40 million residents;
  • Address shortages and ensure every public hospital within our #MediCALForAllCalifornians health care system is equipped with the necessary life saving supplies and medication required to perform life saving procedures;
    • As most shortages involve older drugs that cost less, manufacturers are left little financial incentive to continue to produce them, I will use the prosecutorial, legislative & manufacturing options at my disposal to hold corporations accountable, competitive, and produce the supplies our hospitals need;
  • Expand State-funded medical and pharmaceutical research;
    • Expand State research and clinical trials on medical marijuana’s ability to treat PTSD, anxiety disorders, nerve pain, and chronic pain with Veterans;
    • Expand State research on the development of medication for rare diseases for-profit pharmaceuticals have previously denied when it was deemed unprofitable for them;
  • Waive and/or ensure insurance companies reimburse all surprise bills #OurCalifornia has received which are not covered by AB 72  & AB1611;
  • Commit to accelerating the discovery of personalized, targeted, safer and more effective therapies and treatments for cancer.  Expanding State research and the interdisciplinary approaches of computational biology, clinical pharmacology, functional genomics & robotics to identify new drug targets and potential cures with research nonprofits powerhouses, like Cure First;
  • Commit to transforming communities into healthy spaces through the restoration of our land, air & water.  And strengthening our interconnectedness for a healthy planet and healthy California through environmental stewardship of the Indigenous Environmental Stewardship & Reclamation Department;
  • Commit to transforming our healthcare system for our communities with sustainable and proactive health care throughout  every locality;
  • Waive all past & present medical debt as a result enacting HB 562, California’s Healthy CA – Single Payer MediCAL for All Bill or any other Single Payer MediCAL bill as a result of #MediCALForAllCalifornians;
  • Waive all past & present “surprise medical billing” not included within California’s 2017 legislation – specifically surprise ambulance and air ambulance costs incurred during medical emergencies which are not fully covered by insurance;
  • Eager to work with the California Lifting Children and Families out of Poverty Task Force to ensure all recommended strategies can be funded and achieved for #OurCalifornia through public policy, action & the robust social safety nets we deserve in our resilient and sustainable communities;
  • Support Federal legislation from Senator Bernard Sanders that would create a secure public credit registry to replace our current for-profit credit reporting agencies and prohibit medical care from counting against a person’s credit score;
  • I am eager to work with Justice in Aging, United Indian Health Services, Cycles of Change, ALRP, Clinicas de Salud del Pueblo, California State Rural Health Association (CSRHA), Rafiki Coalition, Roots Community Health Center, California Coalition for Mental Health, California Aging and Disability Alliance (CADA), Futuro Now, HIP, CureFirst, Policy Link, Human Impact Partners, African American Health Institute of San Bernardino County, Alliance for a Better Community, Comité Cívico del Valle, Asian & Pacific Islander Health Forum, Outlet, Life Eldercare, Children NowBlack Women for Wellness (Reproductive Justice Policy Work), Lavender Seniors, Health Equity Guide, California Black Women’s Health Project, California Latinas for Reproductive Justice, Maitri, Jewish Family and Community Services, California Disability Services Association (CDSA), Community Health for Asian Americans, Hope Center, School-Based Health Alliance, California Women’s Law Center, California Collaborative for Long Term Services and Supports, Soledad Enrichment Action, Access: Women’s Health Justice, Building Healthy Communities, 4Kira4Moms, Migrant Clinician Network, California Institute for Behavioral Health Solutions, Alliance for Californians for Community Empowerment, Institute for Policy Studies & all other grassroots and impactful organizations, activists, advocates and pillars in research, community outreach & culturally competent care to ensure the needs of ALL are met in #OurCalifornia;
  • State Deputization of chosen grassroot nonprofits who are successfully providing dynamic and critical social services to #OurCalifornia to act as an extension of our government in expanding their work and services with the funding, staffing and State recognition they deserve;
    • Will participate within the State Jobs Guarantee;
  • In the true spirit of Upton Sinclair’s End Poverty in California campaign, I will call on fellow Citizens, Socialists, Governors, and fellow Socialist Gubernatorial campaigns across this country to adopt and implement the same.
